Safety Tips for your Home
Burglars select homes that look unoccupied and prefer homes that provide some kind of barrier so they will not be seen. As a homeowner, here are some ways to help protect your home and family from intruders:
- Place an Alert Alarm yard sign near your front door and add Alert Alarm stickers.
- Purchase a metal or fiberglass door.
- Install a multi-lock system on all entry doors.
- Do not leave house keys under door mats.
- Keep your home visible by passers-by and neighbors by keeping trees and hedges trimmed.
- When landscaping your home, consider adding exterior lighting.
- Install motion detector lights around the perimeter of your home, particularly near rear and side windows and doors.
- Install glass block on exposed basement windows.
- Do not leave ladders around the periphery of the property. Burglars will use them to enter through the second floor.
- Use timers to maintain normal interior lighting and set them to go on and off at different times of day.
- Keep valuables in a locked and secured safe and well hidden in a non-obvious area of your home.
- Lock all windows and doors. Lock doors when you're in the back of the house or yard. Many burglaries occur when homeowners are out gardening or enjoying their yards.
- When leaving for a long vacation, alert your trusted neighbors and arrange to have mail and newspapers collected daily.
- REMEMBER THIEVES ARE LOOKING TO GET IN AND OUT QUICKLY. MAKE THEIR JOB MORE DIFFICULT BY SECURING YOUR PROPERTY WITH A MONITORED ALERT ALARM SYSTEM.
Fire Prevention Safety Tips
In the kitchen:

- Do not try to extinguish a stove fire with water. Use salt and baking soda.
- Keep a kitchen fire extinguisher nearby. Check it for proper use annually.
In the bathroom
- Never leave a curling iron or other heated device on. Always unplug after use.
- Do not use space heaters to warm towels.
In General

Have a Family Plan in case of a fire
Fires are frightening, for children and adults. Practice a family escape plan for day and night. In the case of fire:
- Establish a family meeting place outside and away from the home. A roadside mailbox is often a good place to meet.
- Plan two ways of escape from the house.
- Teach stay low and stay out. Never return for any reason. Let the Firefighters do that for you. If you go back in you are unlikely to come back out.
- Mark children's bedroom windows with stickers.
Remember, smoke detectors can fail, but a monitored smoke detector will provide 24/7 protection against fire.
